Checklist of Training Requirements

The following is a summary of requirements for those working toward the endpoint of the FRACGP. These requirements are stipulated by the RACGP (see the Standards for Fellowship on www.racgp.org.au) or by GPET, the government funder of training (see www.agpt.com.au) or by the Regional Training Provider (GPTVTC). For the FACRRM - discuss early with your Training Adviser.

To complete General Practice training (FRACGP) you MUST

  • finish your time in training (usually three years) including at least 18 months in supervised general practice.
  • have an adequate range of hospital experience
  • have mandatory paediatric experience prior to GP Term 1
  • complete the Aboriginal Health Curriculum (associated sessions and resources)
  • have Advanced Life Support Skills certification
  • have a completed Log Book (handed out at Orientation) including procedures
  • do Rural placements (depending on Pathway)
  • pass the FRACGP exam
As you go through the training program you MUST
  • submit a Learning Plan once each six months
  • meet with your Training Adviser at least once each six months
  • complete annual re-enrolment procedures within stated time frames
  • apply for terms within stipulated time frames
  • attend educational sessions organized by the Training Provider and complete associated tasks (There is a requirement to make up time and learning for any significant segments missed)
  • complete specific modules as required
  • complete In-Training Assessment activities (this includes quizzes, video analysis, consultation role plays and professional skills project)
  • hand in your Professional Skills Project at least 3 months prior to completing training

Sitting the exam

The FRACGP exam has three parts which can now be sat separately. The three parts are:

1) Applied Knowledge test (AKT) - multiple choice
This can be sat after 18 months FTE (full time equivalent) training, including GP Term 1, if this is supported by your medical educator. However, we recommend sitting the AKT after you complete GP Term 2.

2) Key Feature problem (KFP) - short answer
This can be sat after 24 months FTE training, including GP Term 1 and 2, but you must have passed the AKT (although you can sit the AKT and KFP on the same day i.e. without knowing your AKT result).

3) Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
This can be sat after 24 months FTE training, including GP Term 1 and 2, but you must have passed the AKT.

You must also have CPR certification (obtained within 12 months prior to the date that exam enrolments close).

NB If you have Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) with reduction of training time, this counts as ‘training’ for the above requirements.
