Requirements for Each Term
(based on RACGP 2005 Standards and Valley to Coast requirements)
First GP term (first 6 months of supervised General Practice)
• supervisor needs to be available to provide advice or assistance to the registrar during working hours and during any on-call work the registrar performs
• the supervisor must be able to attend should a situation arise requiring backup
• if the supervisor will be away then a substitute supervisor needs to be available
• patient bookings need to be adjusted to the capacity of the registrar, this usually means 2-3 per hour for the first 3 months and 3-4 per hour for the second 3 months
• supervisor needs to provide 3 hours per week of teaching in the practice during normal hours, one hour of this must be planned, uninterrupted, one-on-one teaching
• the registrar needs leave to be able to attend 12 days of teaching workshops during the six month term (one day per month in Newcastle, one 3 day workshop and three other days of workshop/study leave). This time is paid study leave.
• terms of employment are to be negotiated between registrar and the practice but are not allowed to be below the current National Minimum Terms and Conditions
• practice is paid $510 pw as a subsidy plus $130 ph for documented in-practice teaching time
• supervisors are required to attend at least two days of professional development in teaching/education each year. We provide these workshops during the year. Supervisors are paid to attend.
Second GP term (second 6 months of supervised General Practice)
• supervisor needs to be available to provide advice or assistance to the registrar during working hours and during any on-call work the registrar performs
• the supervisor must be able to attend should a situation arise requiring backup
• if the supervisor will be away then a substitute supervisor needs to be available
• patient bookings need to be adjusted to the capacity of the registrar, this usually means 3-4 per hour
• supervisor needs to provide 2 hours per week of teaching in the practice during normal hours, one hour of this must be planned, uninterrupted, one-on-one teaching
• the registrar needs leave to be able to attend 9 days of teaching workshops during the six month term (one day per month in Newcastle and one 3 day workshop). This time is paid study leave.
• terms of employment are to be negotiated between registrar and the practice but are not allowed to be below the current National Minimum Terms and Conditions
• practice is paid $255 pw as a subsidy plus $130 ph for documented in-practice teaching time

Third GP term (third 6 months of supervised General Practice)
• Supervisor needs to be available to provide advice or assistance to the registrar during working hours and during any on-call work the registrar performs
• the supervisor must be able to attend should a situation arise requiring backup
• if the supervisor will be away then a substitute supervisor needs to be available
• patient bookings need to be adjusted to the capacity of the registrar, this usually means 3-4 per hour
• supervisor needs to provide 1 hour per week of planned, uninterrupted, one-on-one teaching
• the registrar needs leave to be able to attend 2 days of teaching workshops during the six month term
• terms of employment are to be negotiated between registrar and the
• the practice is paid $130 ph for documented in-practice teaching time, there is no practice subsidy

Extended skills training in General practice
• Supervisor needs to be available to provide supervision of the registrar and assistance with their learning
• the practice needs to develop an outline of the learning opportunities available to a registrar (either available in the practice or that can be arranged as part of the post)
• a learning plan will need to be developed for each registrar
• no requirement for set aside teaching time in the practice
• no practice subsidy, no teaching payments
• no teaching workshops, no paid study leave
