Learning in Hospital Terms

An important part of general practice training is the formulation of appropriate learning plans for each of your terms. This is fairly straightforward in your GP terms where you are advised to sit down with your supervisor by week 4 to discuss this. It is a little more challenging during your hospital time. You will have formulated some goals that you need to achieve in order to function well in the particular hospital rotation. However, in addition, you will be looking ahead to being a GP. It is useful to set your own learning goals for your hospital terms in order to gain maximum educational benefit from them for your overall training.

Hospital terms will often be focused on systems. It is the registrar's responsibility to integrate the knowledge acquired in order to apply it to the broad range of problems encountered in the general practice context. To help you do this it is useful to think in terms of the skills you need to practice competently. These can be summarized by the Domains of General Practice outlined by the RACGP curriculum. These include communication skills, professional knowledge and skills, population health, professional, ethical, legal and organizational dimensions. It is also informative to consult the curriculum statements (on RACGP and ACRRM websites) relevant to your particular term (eg child health, women’s health, etc).

To help you focus your thinking a little more you can access guides to formulating your Learning Goals for several different hospital terms.
